전장보다 17.46포인트(0.27%) 오른 6512.61에, 기술주 중심의 나스닥 종합지수는 전장보다 80.79포인트(0.37%) 오른 2만1879.49에 각각 마감했다. 이날 상승으로 뉴욕증시 3대 지수 모두 종가 기준 종전 최고치 기록을 갈아치웠다. 애플이 이날 새로운 아이폰17 라인업을 공개했으나 시장 기대치에 미치지 못하며 주가가 1.48% 하락했다. 반면 엔비디아(1.46%), 아마존(1.02%), 메타(1.78%), 알파벳(2.47%) 등 주요 빅테크(대형 정보기술 기업) 주가는 올랐다. 미 노동부는 이날 올해 1분기까지 12개월간의 고용·임금조사(QCEW)를 반영한 비농업 고용 연례 벤치마크 수정 예비치를 발표했다. 이 기간 비농업 부문 고용 건수는 기존 발표치보다 91만1000명 감소한 것으로 나타났다. 기존 발표치에서 신규 고용이 부풀려졌었다는 의미다. 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 전 세계를 상대로 상호관세 부과에 나서기 전부터 일자리 성장이 정체돼있었음을 시사한다. 미국 고용 사정이 당초 파악됐던 것보다 좋지 않았다는 방향으로 고용 통계치가 하향 조정되면서 투자자들의 경기 관련 우려를 키웠다. 미 은행 JP모건체이스의 제이미 다이먼 최고경영자(CEO)는 고용 하향 조정에 대해 “경제가 약해지고 있다고 생각한다”라고 평가했다. 다만, 통계치 조정이 6개월 이전 기간을 대상으로 한 데다 고용 둔화가 연방준비제도(Fed·연준)의 기준금리 인하 기대감을 강화하면서 시장에 미치는 영향은 제한적이었다. 시카고상품거래소(CME) 페드워치에 따르면 연방기금금리 선물시장은 9월 0.25%포인트(P) 금리 인하 가능성을 93%로 반영하고 있다. 이는 일주일 전(89.4%)보다 4%P 늘어난 수준이다. 투자자들은 이번 주 8월 생산자 물가 및 소비자물가 발표를 앞두고 촉각을 곤두세우고 있다. 전문가들은 물가 지표가 예상을 웃돌 경우 '빅컷' 가능성이 약화할 수 있다고 보고 있다. 박유민 기자 newmin@etnews.com
